We celebrated the new year by making Dutch oliebollen from scratch. Oliebollen, traditionally eaten on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, are a cross between a hot cross bun and a donut. Made from plain flour, yeast, salt, milk, egg, sultanas, apple, brown caster sugar, cinnamon, a bit of lemon juice and fried in vegetable oil.

Great with mulled wine but even better with a good book.
