During the National Art programme, mummy pulls Axel onto her lap and whispers into his ear that she has some lovely news. A baby is growing in her belly and this means that Axel will get a brother or sister. He jumps off her lap and disappears into his room, worried about the arrival of the intruder.
      Huib Hoensbroek has come to play and tells Axel’s mother she has now eaten so much that she is as fat as a toad. Shortly afterwards, Axel wakes up in the middle of the night because paramedics are taking his mother to hospital. The next day, after visiting hours, Axel deciphers in the hospital’s chapel the text: THEY ARE VIRGINS AND FOLLOW THE LAMB WHEREEVER IT GOES.
     This phrase surrounds the statue of St Joseph who is holding a white lily and smells of burnt Bakelite.
      He’s allowed to stay over with Bea Buitendijk for a few days. No one speaks any longer about the little baby in mummy’s belly, until his father takes him to Uncle Jan’s grave. A little further down, they pass through a narrow opening in a tall hedge, and stop at a small wooden cross without an inscription. Father removes his hat and sobbingly begs the Holy Virgin to grant his stillborn son eternal salvation.
      Back at home, Axel scratches the wallpaper behind his bed until a lion with a full mane is staring at him.

Onder Openbaar Kunstbezit trekt mama Axel op schoot en fluistert hem in het oor dat ze hem iets heel fijns moet vertellen. Er groeit een kindje in haar buik en dat betekent dat Axel een broertje of zusje zal krijgen. Hij springt van schoot en trekt zich terug op zijn kamer, verontrust over de komst van de indringer.
      Huib Hoensbroek is komen spelen en zegt tegen Axels moeder dat ze nu zoveel gegeten heeft dat ze zo dik is als een pad. Kort daarop wordt Axel midden in de nacht wakker omdat brancardbroeders zijn moeder meenemen naar het ziekenhuis. De volgende dag ontcijfert Axel na het bezoekuur in de ziekenhuiskapel de tekst ZIJ ZIJN MAAGDEN EN VOLGEN HET LAM WAAR HET OOK HEEN GAAT.
      De woorden omkransen het beeld van de heilige Jozef die een witte lelie in de hand houdt, stinkend naar verbrand bakeliet.
      Hij mag een paar dagen logeren bij Bea Buitendijk. Over het baby’tje in mama’s buik wordt niet meer gerept, tot zijn vader hem meeneemt naar het graf van oom Jan. Iets verderop gaan ze daar door een smalle opening in een hoge heg en houden ze stil bij een klein houten kruisje zonder opschrift. Vader neemt zijn hoed af en smeekt de Heilige Maagd snikkend zijn doodgeboren zoon zielerust te schenken.
      Thuisgekomen scheurt Axel net zolang aan het behang boven zijn bed tot hij wordt aangestaard door een leeuw met volle manen.
